    Unexpected Ending?

Nicholls gives his love story a painful and shocking twist at the end. Emma passes away on July 15 when she is hit by a car while riding her bike to the house Dexter and her were planning to buy. During this time, the couple were also planning for a baby.

In the series finale, we skip to 2003 and 2004, when devastated Dexter turns to his past drug-taking habits in an attempt to self-destruct in order to deal with his loss. When Dexter revisits their early memories of each other while traveling to Edinburgh with Jasmine in 2007, five years after the accident, he finally seems to accept Emma’s passing.
