USA Makes A Return To The Moon After 50 Years With Lunar Landing

America makes a giant leap as it lands up on moon over a half-century later again. Fifty-two years after the last Apollo astronaut stepped onto the dusty lunar surface, the United States has returned to the Moon. On February 22nd, 2024, a privately built lander named Odysseus, developed by Intuitive Machines, touched down near the lunar south pole, marking a historic moment in the annals of space exploration. Here’s everything to know about:

USA Moon Landing Not By NASA

This mission wasn’t a NASA-led endeavor, but rather a testament to the burgeoning private space industry. Intuitive Machines a Texas-based company, alongside other companies like SpaceX, are ushering in a new era of commercial space exploration, where private entities are taking the lead in venturing beyond Earth.

It was the first time US-based aircraft has touched down the surface of the moon since NASA’s last crewed visit of Apollo 17 mission in December 1972. It was also the first commercial-based spacecraft after the last month’s failure of Peregrine-One, a partnership project between NASA and a private company named Astrobotic.

NASA hailed the Intuitive Machines’ success as “a giant leap forward” celebrating the US foots 6-months later to when India became the first country in the world to make the difficult “soft landing” on the south pole of the moon after China’s and Russia’s failure.

USA’s 2024 “Soft Landing” On The Moon:

The landing itself was dramatic. After a flawless launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center, Odysseus embarked on a 4-day journey to the Moon. The descent was tense, with communication hiccups sparking concerns as there was no contact with Odysseus for 10 minutes and a 73-minute long decescent as the lander entered the Moon’s orbit before making the soft landing on the south pole of the moon.

Soon after around 5:32 pm the cheers erupted in mission control as confirmation finally arrived: ‘Welcome to the Moon”.

While the landing was a success, the mission isn’t without its challenges. Communication with the lander remained spotty and the condition of the exact location of the lander was not immediately confirmed unless the Texas-based company confirmed the landing at the planned site called crater Malapert A and ensured the spacecraft to be “upright and starting to send the data.”

What This Lunar Landing Signifies For The USA?

Despite these temporary hurdles, the significance of this mission cannot be understated. It represents a return to the Moon for the U.S. after a long hiatus, rekindling the spirit of exploration that captivated the world during the Apollo era. More importantly, it paves the way for future lunar endeavors, both crewed and robotic.

The mission’s scientific objectives are also noteworthy. Odysseus carries several payloads, including a drill designed to extract lunar ice, which could be a crucial resource for future astronauts and potentially even fuel for deep space exploration. Additionally, the lander will study the lunar surface composition and environment, providing valuable data for future missions.

But the impact of this mission extends far beyond science and technology. It reignites the public’s fascination with space exploration, inspiring a new generation of dreamers and innovators. The sight of a U.S. spacecraft landing on the Moon once again serves as a powerful reminder of human ambition and the boundless possibilities that lie beyond our planet.

However, questions remain. What does this mission mean for the future of lunar exploration? Will private companies continue to lead the charge, or will NASA regain its central role? What are the ethical considerations surrounding resource extraction on the Moon?
