Union Supports Kroger-Albertsons Merger Amidst Growing Opposition

The proposed Kroger-Albertsons merger, the two grocery giants has sparked mixed reactions, particularly among labor unions. While some, like the national UFCW organization, express concerns, UFCW Local 555, representing workers in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming, surprisingly throws its support behind the deal.

Why the Support?

Local 555 sees the divestiture to C&S Wholesale Grocers as a preferable outcome for its members compared to other potential buyers. They believe C&S understands the grocery business and prioritizes quality employees, unlike “financial gurus” at other companies. Moreover, they view the merger as inevitable and prefer a buyer in the industry over online or big-box retailers.

The endorsement from UFCW Local 555 came after the union leaders met with representatives of C&S Wholesale Grocers, LLC, which has agreed to purchase a significant number of stores from both Kroger and Albertsons as part of the merger deal. UFCW Local 555 president Dan Clay emphasized that C&S’s approach to the grocery business and its commitment to quality employees were key factors in the union’s decision to support the merger.

According to Clay, C&S’s perspective offers a refreshing change from the short-term focus of other potential buyers, and he believes that employees of both Kroger and C&S will be better off under the new ownership structure. Sandy Humphrey, the secretary-treasurer of UFCW Local 555, echoed Clay’s sentiments, emphasizing that the union’s support for the merger is ultimately in the best interest of grocery workers, whose working conditions, retirements, and healthcare benefits will be maintained.

Ann Poff, the vice president of UFCW Local 555 and a Safeway employee, also weighed in on the potential impact of the merger on private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, which currently owns Albertsons. Poff noted that Cerberus is looking to sell its stake in Albertsons, and she believes that the merger with Kroger and the subsequent divestiture to C&S represent a positive outcome for workers.

Concerns and Opposition

However, the proposed merger has faced opposition from other labor organizations and policymakers. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has raised concerns about potential job losses resulting from the merger, and several state attorneys general have filed lawsuits to block the deal.

Despite the legal challenges and opposition from some industry stakeholders, Kroger-Albertsons merger seems to be legit. In a recent statement, a spokesperson for Albertsons reiterated the company’s commitment to its employees and customers, emphasizing that there will be no store closures or layoffs as a result of the merger.

Kroger has also been proactive in addressing concerns about the merger. The company has taken out full-page advertisements in newspapers to assure customers and employees that there will be no job losses or store closures, and it has announced plans to invest $1 billion in raising wages and benefits for its associates.

Our Take on Kroger-Albertsons Merger

The Kroger-Albertsons merger saga continues to unfold. While Local 555’s support adds an interesting twist, the deal faces significant hurdles. The coming weeks will be crucial as the FTC completes its review and potential legal battles play out. The ultimate outcome will have major implications for workers, consumers, and the grocery industry landscape.
