In a devastating incident, two boys lost their lives in a house fire early Friday morning, triggered by an explosion in the 2900 block of Highway 94 in South Defiance. St. Charles County Police Department responded to the distress call at approximately 7:45 a.m., revealing the heart-wrenching aftermath of the tragedy.

Upon receiving reports of an explosion, St. Charles County Police Department Cpl. Barry Bayles shared that officers swiftly arrived on the scene within five minutes. What greeted them was a house engulfed in flames and smoke, intensifying the urgency of the situation.
Desperate Search for Children
With information indicating the possibility of children being inside the blazing home, investigators quickly assessed the situation. The house, it was later discovered, housed three adults and two boys at the time of the fire. The adults, relatives of the children, managed to escape the inferno unharmed. However, the two boys, aged 4 and 6, were not as fortunate.
Heroic Efforts by Fire Crews
Fire crews, including the New Melle Fire Protection District, arrived promptly after the police, led by Chief Dan Casey. The victims were identified as the grandchildren of Jennifer Napier Ham and the children of Evelyn Marie Turpiano. Both Ham and Turpiano are active members of the Defiance Merchants Association, a non-profit dedicated to supporting the local wine industry in Defiance. Ham, a former manager at Defiance RoadHouse, and Turpiano, who currently holds the position, have been pillars of the community.
Dan Tripp, co-owner of Good News Brewing in Defiance, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. Tripp, who knew the children and their families personally, highlighted the family’s continuous contributions to the community. In response to the tragedy, Tripp initiated a GoFundMe page to support the grieving family, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to helping others.

The tight-knit community has rallied behind the grieving family, recognizing their significant contributions and willingness to assist others in times of need. Firefighters from five departments, namely New Melle, Augusta, Cottleville, Wentzville, and O’Fallon, collaborated to combat the blaze.
