Violent Crimes in the USA: A Year in Review

Violent crime in the United States has a long and complex history. The homicide rate has been estimated to be over 30 per 100,000 people in 1700, dropping to under 20 by 1800, and to under 10 by 1900. After World War II, crime rates increased in the United States, peaking from the 1970s to the early 1990s. Since then, crime rates have generally trended downward each year, with some exceptions.
In 2023, data from government and private sector sources showed that the murder rate dropped as much as 12% in as many as 90 cities across the United States.
According to the FBI, violent crime, including homicide, fell last year to pre-pandemic levels, even as other types of crime increased.
However, the drop in homicide rates was not uniform across the country, with some cities such as Memphis, TN, showing an uptick in murder rates. Several major cities have experienced high-profile incidents of violence.
These statistics should be viewed with caution, as they are based on incomplete data from local police departments.
In New York City, for example, two police officers were assaulted by a group of deported migrants near Times Square. In another incident, a 28-year-old man was beaten outside the Hard Rock Café.
While violent crime rates have been decreasing overall, there are still areas of concern. Continued efforts are needed to ensure the safety and security of all residents in the United States.
The New York City Police Department has now released surveillance images of more suspects wanted in connection with the Times Square stabbing. The images show eight suspects, and the police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating them. The suspects fled the scene on foot and were last seen entering the Times Square subway station.
The release of these images marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into this violent incident. The NYPD continues to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all NYC residents and visitors.
