A Gist on Shogun

Anjin

The story is about the complex politics of monarchy. A ship lost at sea with the majority of its crew succumbing to sickness, malnutrition, or worse conditions. A country on the verge of disaster. Cultures collide like waves on a rock due to unusual traditions and dangerous confrontations. A new era dawning and an end to an old one. Shogun is a story of Japan’s feudal past during a difficult period.

The plot revolves around the rivalry between the country’s recently arrived English and Dutch Protestants and its Catholic Portuguese allies. The acting, costume design, and cinematography are some of the greatest that have been seen in a long time. An instant hit, the storyline is incredibly beautiful, melancholic, and humorous.

The Review

Anjin
William Adams (September 24, 1564 – May 16, 1620), also known in Japanese as Anjin-sama (anjin, ‘pilot’; sama, a Japanese honorific) and Miura Anjin, was an English navigator who travelled to Japan and is believed to be the first Englishman ever to reach that country. He was the inspiration for the character of John Blackthorne in James Clavell’s bestselling novel Shogun. Soon after Adams’ arrival in Japan, he became a key adviser to the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and built for him Japan’s first Western-style ships. Adams was later the key player in the establishment of trading factories by the Netherlands and England. He was also highly involved in Japan’s Red Seal Asian trade, chartering and captaining several ships to Southeast Asia. He died in Japan at age 55, and has been recognized as one of the most influential foreigners in Japan during this period. (Photo by: Pictures From History/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)

Anjin‘, the ‘Shogun’ series premiere, creates an appealing setting for what seems to be a huge historical drama. With the context of feudal Japan in 1600, the episode presents viewers to a world of complex politics, contrasting cultures, and approaching war.

The Japanese word ‘Engin’ (which means ‘pilot’) might refer to John Blackthorne, a key character in the program played by Cosmo Jarvis. It might also have a dual meaning and refer to Lord Yoshi Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) too, the second major character in the series who is attempting to guide Japan toward a better future. As the season premiere comes to an end, both men find themselves up against overwhelming odds.

It is the year 1600, and Japan’s ruler has passed away. His adolescent heir is too young to succeed him. Five people have been nominated to a Council of Regents to rule by committee by the previous ruler.

Working for the Dutch, Blackthorne is an Englishman whose job is to locate Japan and start the process of removing Catholic rule from it. Protestant settlers desire a share of the wealth. Although, so far the Catholics have kept all of the wealth. It seems that Protestants are hell-bent to have their hands on the entire wealth. It has been a challenging journey. Throughout the journey, nearly every man and several ships were lost. There are now just twelve, Blackthorn Leader is among them and when he is discovered, he is saved by the Japanese, and immediately put in jail.

Both the groups call the other ones as “barbarians” or “savages,” and it makes sense considering how dirty, rude, and wild sailors are. Seppuku is a part of Japanese ceremonies. At a meeting of Japan’s five regents, a young man named Tadayoshi, who works for Lord Toranaga, loses his temper. Feeling guilty about what he did, he vows to kill himself and to stop his bloodline, which includes killing his own child.

Among those leaders is the renowned warlord Lord Toranaga, who has been expanding the number of marriages he accepts and the also size of his kingdom. Lord Ishido, the ruler of Osaka and competitor of Lord Toranga, has united the other three regents against him and is threatening to remove him from office. The remaining regents, who are neither Toranaga or Ishido, have become Catholics and gain privileges from their relationship with the Portuguese Jesuits, who have established a profitable trading channel with Japan in return for cash, weapons, and cannons.

The weak crew of the Dutch ship Erasmus has been taken into custody after it washed ashore. Being an English Protestant who despises Catholics, the ship’s English pilot, John Blackthorne, wants to talk to whoever is in charge in order to create a trading relationship that will allow him to compete with the Portuguese Catholics.
