Missing 12-Year-Old Found Unharmed: Amber Alert Issued and Resolved

LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 1, 2002: (FILE PHOTO) A Caltrans freeway sign over Interstate 5 flashes "child abduction 1 800 TELL CHP" in addition to the description of a suspect's vehicle as part part the statewide "Amber Alert" program August 1, 2002 in Los Angeles, California. Signs all across the state were used in the search for 17-year-old Jaqueline Marris and 16-year-old Tamera Brooks, who were kidnapped at gunpoint around 1 a.m. as they sat in seperate cars with male friends near Quartz Hill, west of Palmdale, California, according to sheriffs officers. Hours later an animal control officer in Kern County tipped Kern County sheriffs who shot Roy Ratliff to death during a rescue of the girls. U.S. President George W. Bush signed the Protect Act of 2003, or the Amber Alert legislation, during a Rose Garden ceremony April 30, 2003 in Washington, DC. In a swift and successful resolution, authorities have confirmed that 12-year-old Linkin Hernandez, who was the subject of an AMBER alert, has been found unharmed. The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) concluded the search, stating that they do not expect to make any arrests in connection with the incident.

    Amber Alert

The AMBER alert was initially issued when Hernandez went missing from the 8500 block of Timber Wolf, near Miller’s Pond on the Southwest Side of San Antonio. Law enforcement suspected that he may have been taken by someone driving a black sedan.

Described as 5’3″ with straight brown hair down to his ears and brown eyes, Hernandez was last seen wearing black/gray sweats, a blue shirt, and white shoes. Concerns for his safety prompted authorities to request assistance from the public, urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact SAPD’s missing person unit at 210-207-7660.

This case, like many AMBER alerts, garnered attention and cooperation from the community, demonstrating the effectiveness of such emergency notifications in quickly locating missing individuals.

In a separate incident, the search for a missing 13-year-old girl, Karley Smart, concluded after hours of being at the center of an AMBER alert in Brazoria County, Texas. The Texas Department of Public Safety had issued an alert stating that Karley was last seen getting into a blue truck at around 5 p.m. in the 200 block of Austin Street.

However, the Angleton Police Department later clarified that there was no evidence suggesting she entered a blue truck, and they suspect her disappearance is a runaway incident. Surveillance video captured Karley walking near her home with a backpack at approximately 2 p.m.

Amid uncertainties, the police department exercised caution by reaching out to the Texas Department of Public Safety for an AMBER alert. They explained that the criteria for an AMBER alert involve a child 13 years of age or younger taken, willingly or unwillingly, without permission from the care and custody of a parent or legal guardian by someone unrelated and more than three years older.

Fortunately, hours after the alert was issued, the Angleton Police Department reported that Karley had been located. While details of her recovery were not immediately provided, the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office confirmed she is a student at Angleton Junior High.

    Conclusion

These incidents highlight the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and the community, emphasizing the importance of prompt alerts and public engagement in locating missing individuals. The resolution of both cases brings relief to families and reinforces the significance of timely responses in such emergencies.
