In a poignant farewell to a prolific career, veteran actor Mike Nussbaum, renowned for roles in “Men in Black” and “Field of Dreams,” has passed away at the age of 99. As the oldest professional working actor in the United States, his journey through stage and screen left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

Nussbaum bid adieu to the world on the brink of his 100th birthday, succumbing to natural causes in the comfort of his Chicago home, leaving behind a legacy that transcends decades. His daughter, Karen, shared, “He was a good father and a good man who raised us to care about other people and respect other people and care about justice.”

Late Bloomer Turned Stage Maestro

Born as Myron Nussbaum in 1923, Mike Nussbaum discovered his passion for acting later in life, entering the profession in his 40s after working in his family’s exterminating business. His late start did not hinder his ascent; instead, it propelled him to remarkable heights. His noteworthy collaborations with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet became emblematic of his late-blooming success.

Nussbaum’s theatrical journey was nothing short of illustrious. In 2019, he received a lifetime achievement award from the League of Chicago Theaters, solidifying his status as the oldest working member of Actors’ Equity. His Broadway credits include pivotal roles in productions such as “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “The House of the Blue Leaves,” and “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?”

On Balancing Fame and Fulfillment

While Nussbaum’s talent could have easily thrived in the fame-centric realms of New York or Los Angeles, he found solace in the vibrant theater scene of Chicago. He once expressed, “I think that being an actor in Chicago, over a number of years, is the most satisfying life I could imagine.” His humility and appreciation for recognition from everyday fans showcased a dedication to his craft that transcended the desire for stardom.

Screen Icon and Television Luminary

Nussbaum’s influence extended beyond the stage, gracing the silver screen with memorable performances. From portraying Bob Drimmer in “Fatal Attraction” (1987) to leaving an enduring mark as an alien jeweler in “Men in Black” (1997), his versatility captivated audiences. His television appearances, including roles in “The X-Files” and “The Equalizer,” solidified his status as a multifaceted entertainer.

End of an Era

B.J. Jones, the artistic director of Northlight Theatre and a close friend of Nussbaum for 50 years, remarked, “It’s the end of an era, the end of the Chicago school of acting. He opened a lot of doors for so many actors here. He loved nothing more than to sit in his dressing room area and absorb the energy of the next generation of actors around him.”

A Lasting Legacy

Nussbaum’s personal life mirrored the richness of his career. Married to Annette Brenner for 56 years, their union produced three children: Jack, Karen, and the late Susan, a playwright and novelist. Following Annette’s passing in 2003, Nussbaum found love again with Julie Brudlos, whom he married until his final days.
