Mazda, renowned for its foray into rear-wheel-drive SUVs with the CX-90, is gearing up for another groundbreaking addition to its lineup – the CX-70. Originally slated for a debut by the end of 2023, this two-row SUV faced a slight delay, heightening anticipation among enthusiasts. The Japanese automaker has now officially announced the reveal date: January 31, 2024, at 3 am Australian time.

Despite the imminent premiere, the automotive world awaits its first glimpse of CX-70 prototypes. Mazda’s February 2023 document unveils key details, describing the design as a “two-row model with the same body as the CX-90.” This design choice implies a maintained size, while the elimination of the third row promises a larger cargo area.

Powertrain Revelations

Recent filings with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) offer a peek under the hood, confirming that the CX-70 will share powertrains with its CX-90 sibling. Customers can choose between a robust turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six and a smaller 2.5-liter four-cylinder featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Both options come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The larger engine offers two states of tune, boasting 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet in its robust version and 280 hp and 332 lb-ft in the milder variant. Mazda has incorporated a mild-hybrid setup into both iterations of the 3.3-liter unit. Meanwhile, the smaller four-cylinder, working in tandem with an electric motor, achieves a combined output of 323 hp and 369 lb-ft from the plug-in hybrid setup.

Pricing and Lineup Expansion

Anticipated pricing for the CX-70 aligns closely with its three-row counterpart. The base CX-90 starts at $39,595, with the plug-in hybrid variant priced from $49,945 – all models featuring standard AWD. This new addition joins Mazda’s expanding SUV lineup, complementing the CX-60 and CX-90, with the CX-80 also on the horizon.

Business Case for Australia

Mazda Australia is currently evaluating the business case for introducing the CX-70 to its market. Expressing optimism based on the brand’s history of embracing new offerings, Mazda aims to continue its legacy of delivering vehicles that resonate with consumers.
