A Gem Within Finnish Lapland

Maps of Finnish Lapland reveal a surprising landscape, far removed from the icy tundra often associated with the Arctic Circle. Instead, the region boasts a network of lakes, rivers, and streams, interconnected by dense forests and sprawling wetlands. At the center of this picturesque tableau lies Lake Inari, its shores deeply jagged with hundreds of inlets and its waters adorned with thousands of tree-covered islands.

To the south and west of the lake, streams cascade down the slopes of tussocky fells, feeding the rivers that nourish Lake Inari with clear, cold water. To the east and north, a wilderness of pine and birch forest and swamp serves as the habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including elks, lynxes, and wolverines.

Carved by Glaciers, Enriched by Nature

Carved out by glaciers over 10,000 years ago, Lake Inari stretches roughly 50 miles (80km) in length and covers an area of 500 square miles (1300sq km). Its steep sides plunge straight down to the bottom, reaching depths of 318ft (97m). According to local songs, Lake Inari is described as “As deep as it is long,” a testament to its majestic proportions and natural splendor.

Despite its Arctic location, Lake Inari enjoys a milder climate thanks to the influence of the North Atlantic Drift, which extends from the Gulf Stream. This temperate climate supports a rich ecosystem, with orange-colored cloudberries flourishing along the shores, providing sustenance for both locals and wildlife alike. The lake teems with an abundance of fish species, including minnows, trout, whitefish, grayling, char, and perch, while migrant birds such as Arctic terns join ducks, divers, and waders in feasting on the lake’s bounty.

Due to the warm weather this year the conditions of the track weren’t good enough for the longest race and only a short version of the competition has been raced in a u-shaped track of 1000 metres. An Ancient Connection to Nature

For centuries, Lake Inari has been intertwined with the lives and beliefs of the indigenous Lapp people. Ancient offerings were made to their gods on the small island of Ukko, north of Inari port, a tradition that echoes through the ages. Today, modernity coexists with tradition as the port of Inari bustles with activity, yet the magical stillness that descends upon the lake with the first snows remains unchanged.

As winter blankets the islands in a pristine layer of snow and ice begins to still the waters, Lake Inari transforms into a serene winter wonderland, enveloping visitors in a world of enchantment and tranquility.
