Balenciaga Controversy Rocked the World
Balenciaga, which has enticed celebrities like Paris Hilton, Michelle Yeoh, Usher and Taylor Swift, among others, came under fire in 2022 over an ad campaign featuring children holding teddy bears in bondage harnesses and costumes. This also has designer Demna embroiled in controversy.
Kim Kardashian, who is a mother of four, had said she was shaken by the campaign’s disturbing images. Initially, the Skims founder was called out for not speaking out. She then shared her statement after cutting ties with Balenciaga in November 2022:
“I have been quiet for the past few days, not because I haven’t been disgusted and outraged by the recent Balenciaga campaigns, but because I wanted an opportunity to speak to their team to understand for myself how this could have happened. The safety of children must be held with the highest regard, and any attempts to normalize child abuse of any kind should have no place in our society – period.”
She highlighted that Balenciaga’s apologized and removed the campaigns. “I believe they understand the seriousness of the issue and will take the necessary measures for this to never happen again.”
Balenciaga Designer Demna Fashion is Art
When the backlash came, Demna, who believes that fashion can no longer be seen as entertainment but rather as the art of making clothes, was taken aback. In 2023, he highlighted the shortcomings that led to such weighty missteps and apologized to those hurt by Balenciaga’s actions.
Cedric Charbit, president and CEO of Balenciaga, said the fashion house would be revamped, wherein the label underwent internal reorganization, new editorial controls and educational programs.
