The incident occurred on January 2nd, 2023, during a game at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, where the Bills’ medical staff heroically saved Hamlin’s life on the field.

A Remarkable Comeback

Following the cardiac arrest, Hamlin underwent a challenging recovery process. Cleared to resume full activities in April 2023, he gradually returned to practice in May, participated in team drills in June, and donned pads during training camp in July. Hamlin’s resilience shone through when he played in his first game during the preseason in August, marking a significant milestone in his comeback journey.

To commemorate the first anniversary of his life-altering event, Hamlin shared a poignant post on social media. Captioned “God’s Child, 1 year later,” the post featured a carousel of photos and videos capturing Hamlin’s journey. The images included a mural of Hamlin in Buffalo, hospital snapshots, and a heartwarming video of him FaceTiming with teammates. Additionally, Hamlin unveiled a new tattoo, showcasing hands making a heart with an electrocardiogram in the center.

Return to the Field: A Victorious Comeback

Hamlin’s triumphant return to competitive play came during the Bills’ preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Displaying resilience and skill, he recorded three solo tackles, contributing to the team’s 23-19 victory. Hamlin’s return to the field symbolizes not only personal triumph but also serves as a beacon of hope for others facing adversity.

CPR Awareness Takes Center Stage

Damar Hamlin’s journey has not only inspired fans but has also spurred a collective effort to raise awareness about life-saving skills. The American Heart Association, in collaboration with the Buffalo Bills, is taking CPR awareness to the turf during the game against the New York Giants.

Heartsaver Hero Awards

The Bills’ medical team, credited with saving Hamlin’s life, will be honored with a Heartsaver Hero Award by the American Heart Association for their quick and effective response during the cardiac arrest. Additionally, a second award will be presented to four community members who performed bystander CPR, showcasing the critical links in the chain of survival.

Fans attending the game are invited to join the American Heart Association’s Nation of Lifesavers™ through an immersive Hands-Only CPR experience. Recognizing the importance of immediate action during cardiac emergencies, the initiative aims to empower bystanders to become lifesavers.

Bills HeartBEAT Initiative

As part of the Bills HeartBEAT initiative, the Buffalo Bills have committed $1 million over five years to train thousands of Western New Yorkers in Hands-Only CPR. The program focuses on community empowerment events to enhance the community’s confidence and ability to perform bystander CPR.

CPR Education for Youth Sports Coaches

In collaboration with the American Heart Association, the Bills are extending CPR education to youth sports coaches. Two hundred CPR & First Aid in Youth Sports™ Training Kits will be distributed in the Western New York community, providing coaches with the necessary tools to impart lifesaving skills, use AEDs, and handle sports-related emergencies.

As Damar Hamlin’s inspiring journey continues, the Buffalo Bills and the American Heart Association are ensuring that his experience serves as a catalyst for increased CPR awareness and education in the community.
