Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig make an unplanned winning Speech at the Critics Choice Movie Awards after Chelsea Handler goes ‘Rogue’. Check out the full details of the awards night.

At the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, host Chelsea Handler surprised everyone with an unplanned moment when she invited Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie onstage for an impromptu acceptance speech for the film ‘Barbie’. The film had already secured several accolades, and Handler’s decision to bring Gerwig and Robbie to the stage underlined the significance of the film’s achievements.

Chelsea Handler went off-script this year while hosting the award ceremony and invited the Barbie leading ladies on the stage for an acceptance speech. Handler’s choice to bring Gerwig and Robbie to the stage stemmed from her wish to address the absence of an acceptance speech for ‘Barbie’ earlier in the evening. When ‘Barbie’ secured ‘Best Comedy,’ Handler declared, “I’m gonna go rogue because Greta and Margot deserve the opportunity to make an acceptance speech. Would you mind coming up and accepting the award?”

The joyfully bewildered duo graced the stage, bursting into laughter as they shared their spontaneous and unrehearsed speeches.

During the speech, Gerwig and Robbie thanked the audience for their support and acknowledged the cultural impact of the film. They also highlighted the strides made in representing women and girls authentically in the film.

Gerwig and Robbie both thanked Handler for the opportunity with Robbie noting: “Thank you, Chelsea. We love you so much! You know when everyone is like, ‘Oh, this is so unexpected.’ This is actually unexpected. This was not a part of the show,” “We were very grateful nonetheless and I Gerwig went on to say.” Robbie stepped aside, letting the Barbie director express herself.

Thank you for letting this happen. We were just very excited in our chairs, and its very nice to be up here,” Gerwig expressed, laughing. “Thank you to everyone that made this movie. I laughed so hard every day, I ruined almost every take, and it’s because of our beautiful cast.”

The Barbie Ditector expressed her gratitude to Mattel “for letting us take their beloved icon and make something so unhinged.”

She also commended her husband and co-writer Noah Baumbach, saying, “Thank you to Noah Baumbach, because we just wanted to make each other laugh, and we made the world laugh too.”

In Sunday’s broadcast, Barbie earned a record breaking 18 nomination spots and won total 7 awards at the Critics Choice Awards, including best comedy and best song (“I’m Just Ken”). The other awards won by the film includes the best original screenplay, best production design, best costume design, and best hair and makeup award and the SeeHer Award (America Ferrera).

The lead acting awards produced some surprises, with Paul Giamatti defeating Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy for The Holdovers, and Emma Stone beating Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone.

The 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards were broadcasted on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. ET/ 4 p.m. PT on The CW.
